What are Sites and how do I use them?

In this article, you will learn how to use the Sites section of our platform to create and manage locations for activities in your supply chains. The “Sites” section is designed to define locations such as plantations, farms, or production facilities and reuse them in various supply chain activities.

What is a Site?

A “Site” refers to the location where an activity within your supply chain takes place. This could be a plantation, a farm, a processing facility, a production site, a warehouse, or something more general. The Sites will replace manual location entries, meaning that in the future, a Site will always need to be specified for an activity.

With Sites, it can be ensured that the same locations are used consistently in a supply chain. Sites can be reused, eliminating the need to manually input locations for each activity.

Adding a Site

To add a new Site to the platform, follow these steps:

Steps:
  1. Navigate to the Sites section.
  2. Click on Add Site.
  3. Enter the relevant information, such as the title, site type, and location. All mandatory fields are marked with a star.
  4. Click Save to store the Site.

The owner of a location is to be understood as the company that carries out one or more activities at this location. You can create Sites for your own locations or for your partners’ locations. These are then displayed in the sites overview as internal, external, or unassigned (i.e. no owner has been selected).

The following Site types are available:

  • Farm
  • Mine
  • Forest
  • Collection Site
  • Origin Site
  • Plant
  • Processing Site
  • Factory
  • Manufacturing Site
  • Warehouse
  • Handling Site
  • Grocery Store
  • Distribution Site
  • Generic Site

Selecting the Site type 'Farm' opens further details that can be entered, such as farm size or focus crop. These further details can be additionally communicated in your product pages. For all other Site types, the fields for entering information remain the same (see screenshot above).

Language settings

In the screenshot above, you can see a language setting in the top right-hand corner. Here you can add and edit the Site title as well as the Site description in different languages. This can also be managed later in the communication of the product page if you want to publish your product in several languages.

Adding an Origin Cluster

An Origin Cluster is a grouping of multiple sites at the origin that produce the same output component, such as a cluster of farms supplying the same raw material (e.g. tomatoes). This feature allows you to combine multiple sites into a cluster and use them collectively in your supply chain.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to the Sites section.
  2. Click on Add origin cluster.
  3. Enter the relevant information, such as the name, owner, and country.
  4. Save the cluster.
  5. Once the cluster is created, you can add additional sites that belong to this cluster.

Origin Clusters allow you to group and manage multiple locations that produce the same component, which is especially useful when dealing with supply chains that have many similar locations (such as farms).

Using Sites for Activities in Supply Chains

The sites you create in the “Sites” section replace the manual location entry in your supply chain activities. Instead of entering a location for each activity, simply select one of the previously created sites.

Steps:
  1. When you add or edit an activity within a supply chain, the option to select a site will be offered.
  2. Select the appropriate site from the list of already created sites.
  3. Save the changes to assign the site to the activity.

By using sites, you not only simplify the supply chain management process but also ensure that all activities are accurately and consistently linked to the correct locations.

Conclusion

The Sites section allows you to efficiently manage the locations in your supply chain and ensure that each activity is linked to the correct site. Use this feature to better structure your supply chain activities and ensure transparency regarding the origin and processing of your products.
